There are a lot of things to do "around town."
A very short train ride, drive, or a little longer bike ride away is a very nice park/garden called Showa Park. It always has beautiful flowers in bloom. It also has tons of cool stuff for kids (of all ages) to play on. Here are just a couple examples of many I could have chosen.
What many people do not realize is that because of it's mountainous terrain, much of Japan is fairly sparsely populated and that there is a lot of beautiful countryside, including waterfalls, narrow gorges, and caves. These photos where taken within about an hour or so drive of base.
Tokyo has literally hundreds of museums. We've enjoyed visiting a fair number of them including the Tokorozawa Aviation museum
and the Fukugawa Edo museum. The Fukagawa Edo museum is a neat recreation of a small Japanese town from the 1800's.
