Historic & Scenic Spots Hakone Shrine C-4 Called "Hakone Gongen (or avatar),"and founded in 757 by Priest Mangan, a noted priest in the Nara period (710-784). The shrine had been worshipped as a guardian deity by pious warriers who ruled the region. Cedar Avenue C-4 Cedar trees were planted along the old Tokaido Highway in 1618 when the Hakone post town was opened. The trees shaded travelers in summer and protected the road from snow in winter. About 420 trees are remaining today. Hakone Checkpoint C-4 The checkpoint was established in 1619 by the Tokugawa shogunate government as a safeguard against the rebellion of subordinate feudal lords. Abolished in 1819 and restored in 1965. Sounji Temple E-3 This temple, built in 1521 as the family temple of the Hojo Clan by Ujitsuna Hojo, the lord of this area. Named after his father, Soun Hojo. In the precinct, there are many valuable properties such as the portrait of Soun Hojo designated as an Important Cultural Property. Stone Buddhas C-3 At the foot of Mt. Kami-Futago, there are many stone Buddhist images of Jizo, a guardian deity of children and other saints. They are natural stone carving made in the 13th century, during the Kamakura period. Many of them are Important Cultural Properties. Stone-Paved Road C-4 The original stone-paved road was built in the 17th century to ease the travel through the steep mountains in bad weather when the trail became muddy. Remains of this road are preserved as historic relics. Owakudani Valley C-3 Sulfurous fumes and clouds of steam rise constantly from the old crater of Mt.Kami. Bubbling hot waters are piped to distant spas. The place is known for its magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. Lake Ashi A crater lake formed by volcanic activity four thousand years ago. It has a 20km circumference with a depth of 43m at the deepest point. The lake abounds in pond smelt, trout, carp and other fish. Elegant swans on the lake relieve travelers' fatigue. Sengokuhara Marsh B-2 To the north of Lake Ashi, Sengokuhara Marsh has many rare marshy plants, protected as Natural Monuments by the government. Kintoki Shrine B-1 At the foot of Mt. Kintoki, the shrine is dedicated to Kintoki Sakata, a legendary hero, called "Kintaro" in his childhood. Today, his name indicates a high-spirited, healthy boy and children enjoy hearing his story.
